I would guess groundhogs, working under contract for squirrels. My mom lost a bunch of cucumber plants to them this spring. I lost one myself to a local cat, which has apparently decided that seedling roots are the next best thing to balls of yarn.

For larger animals, I set up a little zareba using floribunda prunings, and for all animals I find capsaicin in any formulation a useful deterrent.

Heather: Didn't find any shiny trails, but thanks for the tip.

Melissa G: Augh! I hope not. Rabbits are cute; it'll be hard to hate them.

Could also be snails. Check for shiny trails and check under containers. They tend to nip of the easy tender bits and leave raggedy ribs.

Reid: hmm, this is an idea. :-)

Kristen: No, you didn't! I want to hear about your squirrel trap!!

Allison: Sad? You mean Cruelly Dying! And thanks for the haircut comment. I prefer it longer so am desperately thinking growing vibes at it, but it was worth the experiment.

Patricia: Thanks. :-) Dunno about a Facebook profile with this cut, though. So sorry to hear about your cucumbers.

Sorry about your plants. Perhaps squirrels have finer tastes than you thought? If it's any consolation, all but one of my cucumber plants have bit the dust. Who knew it was so hard to grow cucumbers?

And I LOVE your haircut! It's adorable! Please put a new profile pic up on Facebook with this great summer cut.

Deb, you've cut your hair! I like it! Very summer-y.

And that poor plant really does look sad...

I think it's well past time you set up those now-unused iSight cameras to take time-lapse photos of your back yard to catch these little vandals in the act!
