I would guess groundhogs, working under contract for squirrels. My mom lost a bunch of cucumber plants to them this spring. I lost one myself to a local cat, which has apparently decided that seedling roots are the next best thing to balls of yarn.

For larger animals, I set up a little zareba using floribunda prunings, and for all animals I find capsaicin in any formulation a useful deterrent.

Could also be snails. Check for shiny trails and check under containers. They tend to nip of the easy tender bits and leave raggedy ribs.

Sorry about your plants. Perhaps squirrels have finer tastes than you thought? If it’s any consolation, all but one of my cucumber plants have bit the dust. Who knew it was so hard to grow cucumbers?

I think it’s well past time you set up those now-unused iSight cameras to take time-lapse photos of your back yard to catch these little vandals in the act!
